Like most of us from the Mississippi River region to the East Coast, you are probably saying, “Enough winter already! Where is Spring?” If that sounds like you then maybe it is time to head out on a spring travel assignment. Let’s take a look at five areas where there are plenty of opportunities, plus make for a great springtime destination.
North Carolina – If there is one place where you can immerse yourself in a fresh spring garden, it is probably located in North Carolina. From the incredible azaleas at Airlie Gardens in Wilmington to the orchids and tropical plants in the massive 380-acre Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont the colors, smells, and butterfly watching is incredible. If you crave the water, find an assignment in or around the Outer Banks. While still chilly, you can enjoy watersports and offshore fishing. A bonus is that you aren’t dealing with the traffic and crowds you find during peak season.
Arkansas – One of the most overlooked states in America has to be the state of Arkansas. Outdoor lovers know all about the parks, camping, hiking, fishing, mountain biking and the many other activities. Spend some downtime digging for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park, Hike Pinnacle Mountain, or check out the Blanchard Springs Caverns. And after a little physical activity, immerse yourself in one of the many natural hot springs found throughout the state.
California – While the golden state is a fine travel destination any time of the year, springtime makes for a great 13-week break from the cold and winter. If you are down near San Diego, you can spend most of your downtime at the beach, but anywhere along the coast, you will find sunshine and sand. If you need a mountain fix, visit Yosemite National Park or if you want to experience the deep blue sea, visit the aquarium in Monterey Bay just south of San Francisco. When your kids come to visit, take them to LEGOLAND for 128-acres of fun and adventure.
Colorado – A springtime assignment in Denver is a ticket to some of the best festivals in North America. Join 400,000 other visitors and experience the free Cinco De Mayo Festival in Denver’s Civic Center Park or check out the Five Points Jazz Festival in the Five Points neighborhood. Late May will have you rockin’ at the Denver Day of Rock festival in the heart of downtown! Other great spring activities include exploring Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison, Colorado or visiting the awe-inspiring Garden of the Gods at the base of Pikes Peak.
Louisiana – Now that the Mardi Gras crowds have receded, late spring is the perfect time to explore the beauty and culture of New Orleans. Take your time checking out the French Quarter and take a tour of the areas nest French and Spanish Colonial-inspired architecture. The flowers will be blooming, and the gumbo will be steaming to provide a perfect accompaniment to an afternoon of people watching.
