In addition to the southern hospitality and great fall weather, today’s city of Birmingham is rife with history, great eateries, shopping, and more.  Let’s look at some of the many reasons why a travel assignment in Birmingham will be 13-weeks you’ll never forget.

History.  Downtown Birmingham is home to a Civil Rights District featuring an institute and museum dedicated to the human rights struggles that took place in America. Nearby sits the inspirational 16th Street Baptist Church, the site of one of the most horrific racial events in our nation’s history and also Sloss Furnaces, the iron manufacturing industrial site that gave rise to Birmingham in the late 1800’s.

Outdoor Adventures.  While you are on assignment in Birmingham, it is wise to take advantage of the great fall weather and enjoy all of the outdoor activities that are available in this charming southern city.  From Alabama Adventure Theme Park (open through September) to the stunning gardens found at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, to the 122-acre Birmingham Zoo home to almost 1,000 animals from around the world.  Architecture buffs have to make time for a visit to the Arlington Antebellum Home, a fully restored Greek revival mansion built in the late 1840’s.

Five Points South.  Found on the National Register of Historic Places, Five Points South is a neighborhood, located minutes from downtown Birmingham, and home to more than 40 culinary eateries and 30 retailers.  Founded in 1887, Five Point South is a true walk up neighborhood with everyone you can possibly desire within walking distance.  Throughout the year, visitors can find festivals, parades, and special events in the area including pub and grub crawls.  Spend some time in the neighborhood, and you will have made friends for life.

Bar-B-Que.  That’s right, what can be more southern than lip smacking, sticky fingers barbecue and Birmingham has no shortage of famous locations serving up the best around. While in town on assignment, make it a point to visit a few of the barbecue joints like Dreamland BBQ, serving up tasty ribs since 1958. Or, stop by Saw’s Juke Joint for the best barbecue and live jazz music, or Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q for creamed collard greens, loaded mac and cheese, and fall off the bone barbecue.  You will definitely not go hungry during a 13-week trip to B-Ham.

Nightlife and Live Music.  In addition to the great food you can find in Birmingham, there is an abundance of night time activities to accompany your good meal.  From the local craft breweries (see Good People Brewing or Avondale) that are popping up around town to Zydeco, the local hot spot for national and local live music.

Let’s face it, Birmingham Alabama may not be a location on your bucket list of places for a travel assignment, but “The Magic City” is surprisingly one of the country’s most affordable and creative cities.  From the beautiful parks to the historical culture, to the music and food, don’t miss out on the southern charms of Birmingham.  Check out the jobs that are available using Supplemental Health Care’s powerful job search tool or check in with one of our talented recruiters today.
