In 1954, the first National Nurse Week was observed from October 11 – 16 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to Crimea.  In the years following, various legislators tried and failed to have a formal resolution passed to recognize registered nurses in various ways. Later, in 1974 the International Council of Nurses proclaimed that May 12th would be “International Nurse Day,” in honor of Nightingale’s birthday.  Finally, in 1990, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors expanded the one-day event to a week-long celebration by declaring May 6 – 12 as “National Nurses Week.”

National Nurses Week 2018 is drawing attention to the breadth of medical fields that nurses are working in throughout the spectrum of health care. The ANA is supporting a variety of recognition events throughout the week and encourages providers, hospitals, and healthcare systems to plan events as a thank you to the contributions nurses are making by providing quality care to millions on a daily basis. This year’s Nurses Week logo can be downloaded and used for social media posts and other awareness activities.

For nurses looking to earn CE’s, the ANA is sponsoring a free webinar on May 9th, entitled “Emerging Technology and its Impact on Nursing Practice.” Registration is available online for this live event sharing knowledge about how technology is impacting nurses on a daily basis and how we can adapt.
