The weather doesn’t magically get warmer just because the holidays are over. In many areas around the country, it’s the chilliest time of the year as we eagerly await the May flowers. If you’re on a travel assignment in a colder climate, have no fear! There are still many indoor activities you can do in your spare time that will ensure you don’t get cabin fever, cooped up in your temporary residence.
Colder weather can affect your body negatively, both physically and mentally. From joint pain to difficulty breathing and vitamin D deficiencies, the season tends to drag on, leaving you feeling drained. Keep your spirits up with fun activities that will keep you happy, healthy and rejuvenated.
Tap into your youth
In the glow of arcade game lights, it’s hard to keep the smile away from your face. With arcades and billiards bars popping back into style, you won’t have a hard time revisiting your favorite retro activities with a delicious cocktail in hand.
If physical games are more in your lane, see if your local community has a sports complex with pickup leagues, pickleball, or a pool where you can at least pretend its summer. All the endorphins you muster up will make up for the fact that the sun isn’t shining as bright as you’d like.
Signing up for new activities can also make you feel like a kid again. Now’s the time to check out an indoor rock climbing facility or take that karate lesson you’ve always thought about.
When the weather is cold, yoga is hot! Bikram yoga is a 90-minute yoga session performed in a heated studio, where the temperature is kept at 105 degrees Fahrenheit. This more intense form of yoga is a full-body workout and will help you sweat as you practice good posture and mindful relaxation.
Bitter winds and cold temperatures seem to wick any moisture away from the skin this time of year. There’s no better excuse to have a spa day than that! Go for a back massage, enjoy an exfoliating pedicure, and get that customized facial to feel like a brand-new you. If you feel like it’s time for a change, taking a trip to a local salon can give your hairdo the boost it needs. You’ve earned it!
Like the Nightlife baby?
Every area has its own unique nightlife and music scene. Discovering talented local bands is a great way to get to know the city you’re on assignment in, and also to simply sit back and enjoy the moment. Who knows; you might discover a future star and get signed merchandise before it’s priced through the roof!
Another way to learn more about your new area is to check out the local breweries or wineries that have regional creations you can’t find anywhere else. Search for tasting events or stop in during the downtime and chat with the owners about their flavor inspiration over a flight.
