Throughout 2017, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has been running a “Year of the Healthy Nurse” campaign. That theme is continuing during National Nurses Week, May 6 – 12, as “Nursing: The Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit” is the overarching message. Since 1990, this weeklong celebration of the nursing profession has been held between National Nurses Day on May 6th and the birth date of Florence Nightingale, on May 12th.
National Nurses Week will prompt hospitals and other healthcare facilities around the country to celebrate the skills and dedication of the women and men who are a part of our nation’s most trusted profession. In addition to the celebrations, there are many other ways to recognize nursing professionals. The ANA provides a National Nurses Week Toolkit with resources for you to participate in recognition activities like the branded “Thank You Card” or certificate of appreciation.
An important part of the “Nursing: The Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit” theme is the free webinar, A Nurse’s Guide to Preventing Compassion Fatigue, Moral Distress, and Burnout, being held on Wednesday. May 10th at 1:00 PM EST. The one-hour event will present the latest research and introduce tools and strategies to instill meaning, joy, and renewal into your practice and life. It can also be an important reminder of the Nursing Code of Ethics stating that “The Nurse owes the same duties to self and others the responsibility to promote health and safety…and continue personal and professional growth.”
Nurses should also keep their eyes and ears open for businesses that are celebrating National Nurses Week with special giveaways and discounts. EVOS is offering a buy one get one offer for nurses between May 8th and 12th, Cinnabon will take care of your sweet tooth with a special selection of free items for nurses throughout Nurses Week, and PDQ is offering a 50% discount for Nurses on May 9th. For your caffeine fix, Starbucks is selling half-priced Frappuccinos between 3 pm and 5 pm through May 14th.
